Curaçao praktisch
Drinkwater. Het kraanwater hier is heel zuiver, het wordt uit zeewater gedestilleerd en kan prima gedronken worden.

Stopcontacten. Curaçao heeft 110 volt stopcontacten met rechthoekige gaten. Voor het gebruik van deze stopcontacten is een verloopstekker van type A of type B (adapter Verenigde Staten) of een wereldstekker nodig. De Octopus heeft wel Nederlandse stopcontacten met een 220 aansluiting.
Veiligheid. Curaçao is niet onveilig, maar er zijn wel regels die je beter in acht kunt nemen als je een prettig verblijf op het eiland wilt. Het is niet verstandig om ’s avonds na 22.00 uur of ’s nachts op stille, afgelegen plaatsen te lopen, zowel in de stad als op het platteland (dus ook niet op het strand). Het is verstandig om kostbare sieraden, apparatuur (laptops en camera’s) en natuurlijk geld niet in de auto achter de laten. Het spreekt voor zich om ook niet met grote sommen geld de straat op te gaan of met kostbare apparatuur te koop te lopen. Laat spullen, ook duikspullen, nooit onbeheerd op het strand achter.
Taal. Er wordt voornamelijk Papiaments gesproken, maar over het algemeen verstaat en spreekt men er ook redelijk goed Nederlands.
Weer Curaçao
Curaçao heeft een droog tropisch klimaat. De gemiddelde jaar temperatuur is 27 garden en het koelt `s nachts nauwelijks af, alhoewel er bijna altijd een verkoelende passaatwind waait.
Af en toe regent het op het eiland van september tot maart wat vaker dan in de zomer, meestal kort en hevig. Het eiland ligt buiten de hurricane lane, slechts zelden scheert een orkaan langs het eiland.
Wat is de beste reistijd in Curaçao? Het is het hele jaar heerlijk op Curaçao met een gemiddelde tempratuur van 27 graden.
Vervoer op Curaçao
Taxi`s zijn duur, Openbaar vervoer is beperkt, lopen, fietsen en brommer rijden is warm en gevaarlijk door het gebrek aan voetpaden, de slechte wegen en slechte verlichting. Daarom is een huurauto de beste manier om het eiland te verkennen.
Auto huren Curaçao. Er zijn veel autoverhuurbedrijven op Curaçao, maar ze zijn niet allemaal even betrouwbaar Wij werken samen met verhuur maatschappijen waar we zeer goede ervaringen mee hebben. Vraag hierna.
Heb je een internationaal rijbewijs nodig op Curaçao? Nee dat is niet nodig
Moet je een bepaalde leeftijd hebben om een auto te mogen huren op Curaçao? Nee dat is niet nodig.
Verkeersregels. De verkeersregels zijn vergelijkbaar met die van Nederland en er wordt ook gewoon rechts gereden. Houd er wel rekening mee dat de wegen hier vrij glad zijn dus altijd voldoende afstand houden.

Geldzaken
Let op!
* Zorg dat je via je bank app of bankkantoor je pinpas op Wereldprofiel zet (of midden Amerika Rabo bank) anders kun je op Curaçao niet pinnen!
* Geld opnemen kost gemiddeld $10 per transactie. Dit betaal je aan de locale bank. Daarnaast betaal je ook nog aan je eigen bank. Voor pintransacties in het buitenland wordt een koersopslag gerekend van ongeveer 1 tot 1,5 %
Valuta. De officiële munt is de Antilliaanse gulden, maar je kunt ook bijna overal met US dollars betalen. Alleen krijg je het wisselgeld dan wel in guldens terug en rekenen ze de koers vaak naar zich toe waardoor je wat duurder uit bent als je in dollars betaald. Daarnaast is het makkelijk omrekenen als je met guldens betaald. Het is ongeveer de helft. 2 gulden is ongeveer 1 Euro.
Moet ik vooraf Euro`s in guldens wisselen voor Antilliaanse guldens als ik naar Curaçao ga? Dat kan niet. Bij banken hebben ze geen Antilliaanse guldens en ook op Schiphol niet. Maar dat is geen probleem. Bij aankomst op Curaçao kun je op de luchthaven gelijk guldens pinnen met je Nederlandse pinpas.
Zorg wel dat je je pas wel op wereldprofiel of op midden Amerika profiel hebt staan. Dit kun je regelen bij je bank of via je bank app. Anders kun je niet pinnen op Curaçao!
Betalen met je bankpas. Bij de meeste winkels en restaurants kun je gewoon met je pinpas betalen.
Creditcard. Met een creditcard kun je ook vaak betalen op Curaçao,
Banken op Curaçao? Banken zijn van maandag tot en met vrijdag geopend van 8.00 uur ’s ochtends tot 15.30 uur ’s middags.
Gezondheid
Over het algemeen is Curaçao een eiland met weinig uitzonderlijke gezondheidsrisico’s. Het eten is goed en wordt in de regel hygiënisch bereid, het drinkwater is van goede kwaliteit. Curaçao heeft geen malaria of andere tropische ziekten en er zijn dus geen vaccinaties nodig. De muggen zijn soms bijzonder vervelend, maar niet gevaarlijk. Antimuggenspray of lotion (waarin Deet verwerkt is) is dus wel handig.
Gevaarlijke dieren. Er komen eigenlijk geen gevaarlijke dieren voor op Curaçao, zelfs geen gevaarlijke slangen. Er zijn aan de Noordkant (waar je sowieso niet mag zwemmen wel haaien, maar geen gevaarlijke soorten) En heel af en toe spoelt er een Portugees Oorlogsschip aan (een soort kwal) waar je voor op moet passen.

Huisarts. Er zijn veel goede huisartsen en tandartsen op Curaçao en er is ook een goed ziekenhuis. Bij onze huisarts kun je zo binnenstappen. Je rekent gelijk af en je kunt de rekening later declareren bij je zorgverzekering in Nederland.

Apotheken. Er zijn heel veel apotheken die op Curaçao Botica heten. Daar kun je terecht voor voorgeschreven medicijnen maar ook alle andere medicijnen zoals paracetamol of ibuprofen die hier niet in de supermarkt verkocht worden.
Ziekenhuis. Er er is een goed ziekenhuis in Willemstad, dus altijd snel te bereiken.
Inentingen. Het is handig als je gevaccineerd bent tegen Covid.
Winkels op Curaçao
Openingstijden. De meeste supermarkten hebben ruime openingstijden en zijn vaak ook op zondag open. De kleine Chinese supermarktjes zelfs op feestdagen en eerste kerstdag. De winkels in Willemstad zijn van maandag tot en met zaterdag van 8.00 tot 12.00 en van 14.00 tot 18.00 uur geopend. Op donderdagavond is het gezellig in Willemstad tijdens de Punda Vibes en zijn veel winkels tot 20:00 uur geopend. Op Mambo boulevard kun je ook gezellig winkelen.
Supermarkt. Op loopafstand van De Octopus is een Toko waar opvallend veel te krijgen is, maar de dichtstbijzijnde supermarkt is 5 minuten met de auto. Centrum supermarkt is groot en goed gesorteerd. Dagelijks geopend van 7:30 AM tot 19:30 PM zondag tot 17:00 OM
Wat geef ik aan de inpakkers van de supermarkt? Het is gebruikelijk kleingeld te geven aan de jongens en meisjes die je tas inpakken en naar de auto brengen. Eén of twee gulden is prima.
Moet ik nog etenswaren uit Nederland meenemen die op Curaçao niet te krijgen zijn?
Dat is meestal niet nodig. Er zijn gewoon Nederlandse producten te verkrijgen in de supermarkt. Zelfs kaas, pindakaas, drop en stroopwafels.
Horeca
Uitgaan: Curaçao heeft niet het bruisende uitgaansleven van een wereldstad, maar er is tot diep in de nacht genoeg te beleven. Aan het einde van de middag is er in veel bars op het eiland (ook hotel- en strandbars) happy hour met gereduceerde prijzen voor drankjes en soms live muziek. Bij Jan Thiel Beach en Mambo Beach zijn er vaak feesten en op Kokomo beach wordt iedere maand een full moon party georganiseerd.

Waar kun je salsa dansen op Curaçao? Bij mundo Bizarro is er iedere donderdag avond live muziek en kun je dansen. Op donderdag is er ook bij het rif fort live muziek en dansen
Hoever is het dichtstbijzijnde restaurant? Het dichtstbijzijnde restaurant is 3 minuten met de auto of 20 minuten lopen.
Wat kosten uit eten op Curaçao? Dat ligt natuurlijk erg aan het restaurant. De prijzen liggen over het algemeen iets lager dan in Nederland. Voor € 60 kun je met z`n tweeën al prima dineren.
Fooien: Net als in Nederland is de bediening bij de prijs inbegrepen, maar een fooi wordt natuurlijk altijd gewaardeerd.
Hoe homovriendelijk is Curacao? Curacao is een homovriendelijke vakantiebestemming. In 2015 won Curacao de ‘Destination Pioneer Award’ die jaarlijks toegekend wordt door The International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA). Er zijn veel homovriendelijke plekken, zoals Kokomo Beach, Mambo Beach, Grand Café De Heeren en de strandbars bij Seaquarium

Wat is de entree voor stranden op Curaçao? De meeste stranden zijn kosteloos. Soms moet je wel legitimatie meenemen.
Wat kosten ligbedjes op Curaçao? Meestal betaal je rond de 15 gulden (€7,50) voor een bedje.
Parkeren. Je kunt bijna overal gratis parkeren bij de stranden. Vaak is er ook bewaking aanwezig.

Sockets. Curaçao has 110 volt sockets with rectangular holes. A type A or type B adapter (United States adapter) or a world plug is required to use these sockets. The Octopus does have Dutch sockets with a 220 connection.
Safety. Curaçao is not unsafe, but there are rules that you should observe if you want a pleasant stay on the island. It is not wise to walk in quiet, secluded places in the evening after 10 p.m. or at night, whether in the city or in the countryside (including not on the beach). It is wise not to leave valuable jewelry, equipment (laptops and cameras) and of course money in the car. It goes without saying that you should not take to the streets with large sums of money or flaunt expensive equipment. Never leave belongings, including diving gear, unattended on the beach.
Language. Papiamentu is mainly spoken, but in general people understand and speak Englisch reasonably well.
Weather Curaçao
Curaçao has a dry tropical climate. The average annual temperature is 27 degrees and it hardly cools down at night, although there is almost always a cooling wind blowing.
Occasionally it rains on the island from September to March more often than in summer, usually short and heavy. The island is located outside the hurricane lane, only rarely does a hurricane skim past the island.
When is the best time to travel to Curacao? It is wonderful all year round on Curaçao with an average temperature of 27 degrees.
Transport on Curaçao
Taxis are expensive, public transport is limited, walking, cycling and moped riding is hot and dangerous due to the lack of footpaths, the bad roads and poor lighting. Therefore, a rental car is the best way to explore the island.
Car rental: There are many car rental companies on Curaçao, but not all of them are equally reliable. We work with rental companies with which we have very good experiences.
Do you need an international driver's license in Curaçao? no that is not necessary

Money
* Withdrawing money costs an average of $10 per transaction. You pay this to the local bank. You also pay to your own bank. A rate surcharge of approximately 1 to 1.5% is charged for debit card transactions abroad.
Currencies. The official currency is the Antillean guilder, but you can also pay with US dollars almost everywhere. Only you get the change back in guilders and they often charge the exchange rate to them, which makes it a bit more expensive if you pay in dollars. In addition, it is easy to convert if you pay with guilders. It's about half. 2 guilders is about 1 Euro.
Do I have to exchange Euros in guilders for Antillean guilders in advance when I go to Curaçao? That is not possible. They don't have Antillean guilders at banks and neither at Schiphol. But that's not a problem. When you arrive on Curaçao, you can immediately withdraw guilders at the airport with your Dutch debit card.

Health
In general, Curaçao is an island with few exceptional health risks. The food is good and as a rule hygienically prepared, the drinking water is of good quality. Curaçao has no malaria or other tropical diseases, so no vaccinations are needed. The mosquitoes are sometimes very annoying, but not dangerous. Anti-mosquito spray or lotion (which contains Deet) is therefore useful.
Dangerous animals. There are actually no dangerous animals on Curaçao, not even dangerous snakes. On the north side (where you are not allowed to swim anyway, there are sharks, but no dangerous species) And every now and then a Portuguese Warship (a kind of jellyfish) washes up that you have to watch out for.

pharmacies. There are many pharmacies that are called Botica in Curaçao. You can go there for prescription medicines, but also all other medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen that are not sold here in the supermarket.

Shops on Curacao
Opening hours.
Most supermarkets have extended opening hours and are often also open on Sundays. The small Chinese supermarkets even on public holidays and Christmas Day. The shops in Willemstad are open from Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00. On Thursday evening it is cozy in Willemstad during the Punda Vibes and many shops are open until 20:00. You can also enjoy shopping on Mambo boulevard.
Grocery store.
Within walking distance of De Octopus is a Toko where you can get a lot of things, but the nearest supermarket is 5 minutes by car. Center supermarket is large and well-stocked. Open daily from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM Sundays to 5:00 PM
What do I give to the packers at the supermarket?
It is customary to give change to the boys and girls who will pack your bag and take it to the car. One or two guilders is fine.
Catering
Nightlife. Curaçao does not have the bustling nightlife of a metropolis, but there is plenty to do until late at night. At the end of the afternoon, many bars on the island (including hotel and beach bars) have happy hour with reduced prices for drinks and sometimes live music. At Jan Thiel Beach and Mambo Beach there are often parties and on Kokomo beach a full moon party is organized every month.

Where can you dance salsa on Curaçao? At mundo Bizarro there is live music every Thursday evening and you can dance. On Thursdays there is also live music and dancing at the reef fort
How far is the nearest restaurant?The nearest restaurant is 4 minutes by car or 20 minutes on foot.
Price dinner Curaçao. That, of course, very much depends on the restaurant. Prices are generally slightly lower than in Europe or US. For € 60/$70 you can have a good dinner for two.
